About
The Portland Upwelling Festival will be held on the 31st October - 2nd November, in the seaside town of Portland, Victoria. Ten bands, over 130 market stalls, 2 dance groups, a troupe of acrobats and hundreds of paraders will celebrate Naymat Karween, or the Southern Ocean.
The unique natural phenomena, The Bonney Upwelling will be acknowledged with a Ceremony on the 31st of October. The Nyamat Yarkeen Karween will be held on the banks of the Portland Canal, in a spot suggested by Sammy the Elephant Seal. He spent so much time there, nestled in a little natural amphitheatre, that our Cultural Director Shea Rotumah saw it as a sign from the Sea.
On Saturday, the 1st of November, the day will start at 7.30am with the Blessing of the Fleet and a free BBQ breakfast provided by the Rotary Club of Portland Bay and Portland Lions Club. Our colourful sea-themed street parade will wind its way down from the All Saints Church to the foreshore at 10am, and the Community Call to the Sea will be in full voice, led by Les Horovitz, Tony Burgess and Karen Meredith.
The 3 Bays Running Festival will be held across all three days, and entries are still open. The 60km course winds through some of the most beautiful coast line in the world. You may even see a whale. A comprehensive guide is available here.
